A paragraph consists of several sentences that are grouped together. This group of sentences together discuss one main subject. In formal academic English, paragraphs have three principal parts.
These three parts are
- The topic sentence
- The body sentences, and
- The concluding sentence.
This format is quite similar to essay writing. Here we have almost similar parts.
- The introduction
- The body and
- The conclusion.
The topic sentence of the paragraph is similar to the introduction of the essay. The topic sentence in a paragraph conveys the overall point of the paragraph. It helps the reader to know about the content in brief. Similar is the case with essay writing. Reading the introduction of an essay one can decide what is to come ahead.
The body of both paragraph and essay gives more information about the main idea and topic through examples, evidences and facts.
The concluding part is a small summary of what has been mentioned in the body of the paragraph or essay.
